Tag/Day 0 auf dem Weg zur/on the way to ALLURE OF THE SEAS in Civitavecchia, Italy

Ich wollte zu Hertz und musste eh rüber zum Flughafen-Terminal. Deswegen verzichten wir auf das Frühstück im Hilton Hotel, zumal es an jeder Kaffeebar in Italien es billiger ist. Fasziniert bin ich allerdings von den Gängen im Hilton Hotel, die farblich unterschiedlich gestaltet sind. Hier der rote Gang.



I wanted to get to Hertz and had to go over to the airport-terminal anyway. That was why we did not book breakfast in the Hilton Hotel, especially since it was cheaper at every coffee bar in Italy. However, I was fascinated by the corridors in the Hilton Hotel, which had different colors. Here the red gear.

Now in the brightness, we could see how far the airport-terminal was away.



Im Hellen sehen wir erst, wie weit das Flughafen-Terminal entfernt ist.

Man muss halt den Gang erwischen, der einen entlang der Garagen zum Flughafen-Terminal, Mietwagencenter und Bahnhof führt.



You needed to catch the gangway, which would take you alongside the parking lots toward the airport-terminal, car rental center, and train station.

The train station was even in sight distance.



Der Bahnhof ist sogar in Sichtweite.

Und nun sehen wir endlich auch mal die Vorfahrt vom Hilton Hotel im Hellen.

In front of the Hilton Hotel, there was a lot of artworks.



Vor dem Hilton Hotel gibt es viele Kunstwerke.

Auch sehr gut: man wird kostenlos in das Stadtzentrums Rom gebracht.



Also very nice: you could get free of charge into the Rome City Center.

It was also convenient if you did not want to go with all your bags into the town.



Ist daher auch sehr praktisch, wenn nicht extra nach Rom mit dem ganzen Gepäck reinwill.



We went to the Caffé RoMe & You in airport-terminal 1. The cappuccino was good, and I liked the Tramezzini, as far as I got it in one single piece. And finally, I also knew how to fill a cornetto (= croissant) with Nutella and other items. The croissant got an "enema".



Wir gehen ins Caffé RoMe & You im Flughafen-Terminal 1. Der Cappucino ist gut und ich mag die Tramezzini, soweit ich sie am Stück bekomme. Und endlich weiß ich auch, wie man ein Cornetto (= Hörnchen) mit Nutella und anderen Sachen füllt. Das Hörnchen bekommt einen "Einlauf".



At least, we were for quick break "in" Rome, Italy.



Wenigstens waren wir kurz "in" Rom.



Since the way was too long, to walk all the time force and back, we went right after the breakfast to Hertz.



Da uns der Weg zu weit ist, ständig hin und her zu laufen, gehen wir nach dem Frühstück direkt zu Hertz.

Es ist direkt zwischen dem Flughafen-Terminal und dem Bahnhof.



It was right between the airport-terminal and the train station.

It was quite calm. We quickly pulled a number and soon, it was our turn.



Alles ist recht leer. Wir ziehen schnell eine Nummer und sind schnell dran.

Wir bekommen ein nettes Upgrade auf einen VW Passat Variant. Dabei hatten wir bloß einen kleinen Fiat. Andere Amerikaner bekamen als Upgrade, weil sie sechs Personen waren, einen Van angeboten, aber sie trauten sich ihn nicht zu fahren. So versuchen sie es mit zwei Fiat Puntos (mit Gepäck für 6 Personen!!!): Mamma mia!!!



We got a nice upgrade to a Volkswagen Passat Estate. We only booked a small Fiat. Other Americans were offered a van as an upgrade because they were six, but they did not dare to drive it. So they tried it with two Fiat Puntos (with luggage for 6 people !!!): Mamma mia !!!

We booked at Hertz: Important: Enter discount code 583966 and rate code HHR3EU. Then you should get a price of 31.06 EUR (2015) for the rent and 32.00 EUR (2015) for the Super Cover insurance. I liked to try the COTRAL bus (only one direct connection in the afternoon and early morning back on weekdays) to Civitavecchia, but I was just too comfortable for that. In the end, we had to refill the car in Civitavecchia for 5.00 EUR.



Wir haben bei Hertz gebucht: Wichtig: Discount-Code 583966 und Rate-Code HHR3EU eingeben. Dann kommt ein Preis von 31,06 EUR (2015) für die Miete und 32,00 EUR (2015) für die Super Cover-Versicherung heraus. Ich hätte ja mal gerne den COTRAL-Bus (nur eine Direktverbindung am Nachmittag und frühmorgens zurück an Werktagen) nach Civitavecchia ausprobiert, aber dafür bin ich einfach zu bequem. Am Schluss haben wir in Civitavecchia für 5,00 EUR den Wagen noch aufgetankt.

Bei der Einfahrt zur Autobahn nach Civitavecchia haben wir 2,10 EUR (2015) Maut bezahlt und bei der Ausfahrt in Civitavecchia-Süd waren nochmals 2,50 EUR (2015) Maut fällig.

Our TomTom indicated a few congestions due to construction sites, but overall we were very fast in Civitavecchia because it was also tranquil.



Unser TomTom zeigte uns ein paar Behinderungen wegen Baustellen an, aber insgesamt waren wir sehr schnell in Civitavecchia, weil es auch sehr ruhig war.

Warum auch immer: ich hatte die Hotelzimmer für 169,00 EUR die Nacht storniert und wollte näher zum Hafentor, um einfach zum Schiff zu kommen. Deswegen habe ich das Alibrandi Palace am Anfang der Fußgängerzone in Civitavecchia gebucht. Man muss ein wenig sich damit arrangieren, dass es kein Hotel ist und daher man nicht beliebig an- und abreisen kann. In der Fußgängerzone habe ich mal kurz hingestellt, um das Gepäck auszuladen. Einen Fahrstuhl gibt es nicht. Der Empfang war sehr freundlich und die Zimmer sauber und funktional. Es war so ziemlich alles da, was wir brauchten. Nur eine Minibar fehlte eigentlich.



For whatever reason: I canceled a hotel room for 169.00 EUR the night and wanted to get closer to the harbor gate to get to the ship. That was why I booked the Alibrandi Palace at the beginning of the pedestrian zone in Civitavecchia. You needed to arrange a bit with the fact that it was not a hotel and therefore you could not come and go at your convenience. In the pedestrian zone, I once stopped to unload the luggage. There was no elevator. The welcome was amiable, and the rooms were clean and functional. There was just about everything we needed. Only a mini bar was missing.

In between, I returned the car... Unfortunately, Hertz forgot to mention that Italian VAT would apply on top of the rates since it was a net rate when I was reserving on the internet.



Zwischendurch bringe ich den Wagen zurück... Leider hat Hertz mir wohl bei der Reservierung im Internet vergessen zu sagen, dass es alles Nettopreise sind und noch die italienische Mehrwertsteuer darauf kommt.

Hertz wirbt damit, dass sie auch sonntags geöffnet haben, aber als wir nachfragen: nur in den Sommersaison auf Anfrage und nur mit einem Zuschlag. Am Schiff wird man nicht abholt, aber wohl am neuen Busbahnhof für Kreuzfahrer Largo del Pace.



Hertz advertised that they also would be open on Sundays, but when we double-checked: only in the summer season on request and only with a surcharge. They would not collect you at the ship, but probably at the new bus terminal for cruisers Largo del Pace.

Now I realized that I originally booked the wrong hotel: Hotel de la Ville was the hotel next to Hertz.



Jetzt merke ich, dass ich eigentlich das falsche Hotel ursprünglich gebucht habe: Hotel de la Ville ist das Hotel neben Hertz.

Und ich hatte zuvor im Hotel San Giorgio gebucht, die sowohl einen Shuttle-Service vom/zum Flughafen Fiumicino, als auch vom/zum Schiff am Kreuzfahrtterminal anbieten. Aber dafür wollten sie für die Nacht auch 169,00 (2015) EUR haben. Und die Shuttles hätten ja auch extra gekostet.

From my window, I discovered the sign for the Green Turtle - a seafarers center in the hands of Filipinos.

Hier deckt sich die Crew mit Spezialitäten von zu Hause ein und kann eine philippinische Mahlzeit zu sich nehmen, Geld überweisen, telefonieren usw.



Here, the crew supplied themselves with specialties from home and could have a Filipino meal, transfer money, make calls, etc.

Since we were usually in Rome or elsewhere, we took the time to look around a bit in Civitavecchia.



Da wir meistens ja in Rom oder woanders sind, nutzen wir die Zeit uns ein wenig in Civitavecchia umzusehen.





Wir laufen ein wenig entlang der Hafenmauer lang.

Dort entdecke ich dann auch Kevin im Schaufenster.

Der Laden hatte zum Glück zu, aber ich hätte auch keine Idee gehabt, wie ich ihn hätte nach Hause bekommen sollen.



Luckily the store was closed, but I had no idea how to get it home.

We went for lunch. We were on our way on NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (1). At that time we had a huge problem. We had to embark and could not return the rental car, because AVIS maintained a long lunch break. Nowhere, we could return the key safely. To pause and develop a plan, we went to Restaurant La Bomboniera to have lunch. The food was delicious. Even better was the helpfulness of the daughter of the owners Michaela, who returned on our behalf the car key with AVIS. Therefore, it was already clear for us: We had to go back here again to thank us and to eat here in peace and without the hustle and bustle. We just ordered something for two people. Even with the side salad, I had the impression that each bowl for 4 people was enough. The grilled fish was fantastic: juicy and delicious !!! And the desserts... Mamma Mia!



Wir gehen zum Mittagessen. Wir waren mit der NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (1) unterwegs. Damals hatten wir ein Riesen-Problem: wir mussten zur Einschiffung und konnten den Mietwagen nicht abgeben, weil AVIS eine lange Mittagspause pflegt und wir nirgendst den Schlüssel einwerfen konnten. Um mal in Ruhe nachzudenken, haben wir uns in das Restaurant La Bombaniera reingesetzt, um über die weitere Vorgehensweise während des Mittagessen zu erörtern. Das Essen war sehr gut. Noch besser war die Hilfsbereitschaft der Tochter des Hauses Michaela, die für uns den Autoschlüssel bei AVIS abgegeben hat. Daher stand für uns schon damals fest: Wir müssen nochmals hierher zurück, um uns zu bedanken und auch hier mal in aller Ruhe und ohne Hetze etwas zu essen. Wir hatten bloß etwas für zwei Personen bestellt. Schon beim Beilagensalat hatte ich den Eindruck, dass jede Schüssel für 4 Personen reichte. Der gegrillte Fisch war fantastisch: Saftig und lecker!!! Und die Desserts... Mamma Mia!

Auf jeden Fall hat es uns sehr gut gefallen: wir konnten dem Fisch im Grill zugucken, wie er gar wurde und einfach nur duftete. Mit etwas Zitronensaft und Olivenöl. Einfach nur lecker. Ich hatte in dem Restaurant meine Freude.



In any case, we enjoyed it very much: we could watch the fish in the open fire, how it was cooked and just smelled. With a little lemon juice and olive oil. Just delicious. I had my pleasure in the restaurant.

So Grazie Mille to the family Maria Giovanna (awarded chef), Guilio (owner) and Michaela (daughter of the owners) for the great hospitality. We would come back someday.

Some might say that it would be cheaper to dine with "Long John Silver's" in the US or with "Harry Ramsden's" in the UK. If you never ate before freshly prepared fish from the grill, you would yet know what you missed so far. And you could hardly compare it with Fish and Chips of "Long John Silver's", or "Harry Ramsden's". It was worth every penny!!! To eat so well, for example, we would need to go to Frankfurt, Germany and it would not be sure to get the fish. And since I worked in Basle, Switzerland: Paying for each menu more and it would not mean that I liked it!



Manche mögen sagen, dass es bei "Nordsee" in Deutschland billiger ist. Aber wer noch nie im Leben so Fisch frisch vom Grill gegessen hat, weiß noch nicht, was er verpasst hat und man kann ihn kaum mit dem Alaska-Seelachsfilet von "Nordsee" vergleichen. Uns war es jeden Cent Wert!!! Um so gut zu essen, müssten wir beispielsweise bis nach Frankfurt fahren und ob wir dort den Fisch so bekommen, ist auch noch fraglich. Und seit dem ich in Basel arbeite: Hier zahle für jedes Menü mehr und schmecken tut es mir trotzdem nicht unbedingt!

Uns fiel während unseres Besuches ein japanisches Touristenpaar auf, das das Restaurant betrat und sich länger mit dem Chef des Hauses unterhalten hat. Vor dem Restaurant steht diese Statue.



We noticed during our visit a Japanese tourist couple who entered the restaurant and talked longer with the owner. In front of the restaurant was the statue.

Hasekura Tsunenaga was a Japanese envoy who was active in Europe.

Wir waren so voll, dass wir nun zum Shipspotten in den Hafen gelaufen sind und ich musste mich schon mal erkundigen, wo ich am nächsten Morgen die einlaufenden Schiffe am Besten fotografieren kann. Die erste Entdeckung SEVEN SEAS MARINER, die jetzt einen anderen Anstrich hat.



We were so full that we went to the ship spotting to the port. I had check already, where I could photograph best the incoming ships the next morning. My first discovery SEVEN SEAS MARINER, which now had a different painting.

I did not recognize the other ships. But they were too far away for me to photograph them accurately. So we went into the harbor. Michaela told me you could get in around the clock.



Die anderen Schiffe habe ich zwar erkannt. Sie waren mir aber zu weit weg, um sie vernünftig zu fotografieren. Also ging es in den Hafen rein. Michaela sagte mir, dass man rund um die Uhr reinkommt.

Das Hafentor gibt es immer noch. Nur darf man dort nicht mehr mit dem Auto reinfahren. Die Shuttle-Busse zu den Kreuzfahrtschiffen fahren hier nicht mehr ab. Ein paar Meter weiter rein fahren aber nach wie vor die Shuttle zu den ADM Fährterminals ab. Auch nachts kann man hier durch.



The harbor gate was still there. Only you not allowed to drive in there by car anymore. The shuttle-buses to the cruise ships did not leave from here. A few more steps in the port, still the shuttle to the ADM ferry terminals departed. Also, at night, you could go through.

Around the fortress Forte Michelangelo, everything was rebuild newly.

Eigentlich sehr schade.



Actually, it was a little sad.

You could walk to the pier, but only the ship which berthed at pier 11 could be well photographed.



Zu dem Pier kann man hinlaufen, aber leider kann man von dort aus nur gut das Schiff fotografieren, das am Pier 11 liegt.

Hier sind leider nur die Shuttle-Busse, die zu den ADM Fährterminals fahren.

Vielleicht gibt es ja hier an der Ruine auf der Halbinsel eine Möglichkeit gut zu fotografieren.

Im Hafen finde ich ein weiteres Seefahrer-Center.



In the port, I found another seafarers center.

Too bad that the old ferry dock for connection to the Gulf of Aranci in Sardinia was behind fences. From here you could undoubtedly take terrific pictures.



Schade, dass der alte Fähranleger für die Verbindung zum Golf von Aranci auf Sardinien eingezäunt ist. Von hier hätte man bestimmt sehr gut fotografieren können.

Er trägt die Tragetaschen und sie trägt die Spüle. Das nennt man Emanzipation.

In the harbor, we found a reference to a new bus route, which connected the train station with the cruise terminal.

That was the new bus terminal for cruisers Largo del Pace. You needed to walk about another mile through the town to get to the station.



Da ist also der neue Busbahnhof für Kreuzfahrer Largo del Pace. Man muss nochmals 1,5 km durch die Stadt zusätzlich laufen, um zum Bahnhof zu kommen.

An der Haltestelle für die Shuttle-Busse zu den ADM Fährterminals steht ein einsamer Bus von Holland America. Ob es für die besondere Arrangements gibt?

Im Hafen liegt noch die ZUIDERDAM.



ZUIDERDAM was in port too.

But for a photographer, she was docking at an unpleasant location.



Nur für einen Fotografen total unglücklich.

Zufällig entdecke ich eine Feuertreppe am Gebäude der Hafenbehörden.



By coincidence, I discovered the fire stairways at the building of the Port Authorities.

They did not like it that I walked on their roof and send me away from their stairways.



Die fanden das gar nicht lustig, dass ich denen aufs Dach gestiegen bin und jagen mich kurzerhand wieder von der Treppe runter.

Leider verpasse ich später die Ausfahrt. Aber ich hatte sie eh zuletzt in Half Moon Cay gesehen.

Sehr schade: Dass ich keine Gelegenheit hatte näher an die RHAPSODY OF THE SEAS zu kommen. Ich hätte sie gerne besser fotografiert. Vor allem wäre ich gerne mit meiner Kabinenstewardess von der QUANTUM OF THE SEAS 2014 Camilla essen gegangen. Aber bei Passagierwechsel ist das schuir unmöglich. Sie hat sich aber sehr über meine Grüße gefreut.



Very sad: I had no chance to get closer to RHAPSODY OF THE SEAS. I really would love to take better pictures. Especially, I really would love to have lunch with our stateroom attendant Camilla from QUANTUM OF THE SEAS 2014. But when they had passenger exchange, it was totally impossible. She was happy to receive my regards.

As we walked out through the new exit for cruisers, we also saw that Europcar was now at the bus terminal for cruise passengers Largo del Pace.



Als wir durch den neuen Ausgang für Kreuzfahrer rauslaufen, sehen wir auch, dass jetzt Europcar direkt am Busbahnhof für Kreuzfahrer Largo della Pace ist.

Und AVIS ist aber genauso weit. Quasi auf dem halben Weg zu La Bomboniera.



But AVIS was about the same distance. More or less on the halfway to La Bomboniera.

By now they had a mailbox outside, but I did not think I would return a key here.



Mittlerweile haben sie einen Briefkasten draußen, aber ich glaube nicht, dass ich hier einen Schlüssel einwerfen würde.

Von hier aus liegt der Busbahnhof für Kreuzfahrer Largo del Pace einmal um die Ecke.

In our Hotel Alibrandi Palace, they offered, by the way, special rates for cruisers. Maybe we should call in future here.



In unserem Hotel Alibrandi Palace werden übrigens Sonderraten für Kreuzfahrer angeboten. Vielleicht sollte man mal künftig dort anrufen.

Auf dem halben Weg von La Bomboniera zu unserem Hotel Alibrandi Palace liegt das Caffe Danilo. Das sah auch alles so lecker aus, aber wir waren noch so voll vom Mittagessen in La Bomboniera: mehr als ein Espresso ging nicht. Versehentlich bestelle ich mir einen Caffe Corretto. Erst als man mir sagt, dass kein Grappa mehr da sei und mich fagt, was ich stattdessen möchte, merke ich, dass ich es mit einem spanischen Cafe Cortado verwechselt habe.



Half way from La Bomboniera to our Hotel Alibrandi Palace there was Caffe Danilo. It all looked so delicious, but we were so full of lunch at La Bomboniera: more than an espresso, it was impossible for us to have. I accidentally ordered a Caffe Corretto. I was shocked when I was told that there was more grappa left and what I would prefer to have instead. By mistake, I ordered it and mixed up with a Spanish Cafe Cortado.

We went back to the train station to take a look around, which changes were here. The travel agency of the railway was finally completed in front. Here you could also get combined tickets for selected attractions. The cancellation boxes were no longer yellow, but in the corporate colors of Trenitalia and the BIRG ticket was still not available from the machine.



Wir gehen nochmals zum Bahnhof, um uns noch ein wenig umzusehen, welche Änderungen es hier gibt. Das Reisebüro der Bahn ist vorne endlich fertiggestellt. Hier erhält man auch Kombi-Tickets für ausgewählte Sehenswürdigkeiten. Die Entwerter sind nicht mehr gelb, sondern in den Hausfarben der Trenitalia und das BIRG-Ticket gibt es nach wie vor nicht aus dem Automaten.

Auf dem Weg zum Abendessen entdecken wir zufällig einen Bioladen mit Saftbar: Bio's Cristina Duca.

Wir konnten uns auch hier das Obst selbst zusammenstellen.

Es hätte aber auch Vorschläge gegeben.

Vorteil: kaum Schaum. Nachteil: 600 EUR in der Anschaffung und man muss alles sehr klein vorschneiden. ABER RICHTIG LECKER.



Advantage: barely foam. Disadvantag: about 700 USD for the purchase and you needed to dice everything very small. BUT IT WAS DELICIOUS.

So we found another favorite place in Civitavecchia.



Und noch ein weiteres Stammlokal in Civitavecchia gefunden.



We just wanted to have a small bite for dinner. On Tripadvisor, I found the Antica Salumeria Sebastiani. It was not really a restaurant. Rather, a very nice cozy deli, where you could also eat or just a small restaurant, where you can buy very well. We ordered only for two people, and we probably could feed six more people. The ladies were magical and wanted to pack everything for us. Stupid was just: we had no mini-bar in the room.



Wir wollten bloß eine Kleinigkeit essen. Über TripAdvisor habe ich das Antica Salumeria Sebastiani gefunden. Es ist eigentlich kein richtiges Restaurant. Eher ein sehr schöner gemütlicher Delikatessenladen, bei dem man auch essen kann oder eben ein kleines Restaurant, bei dem man auch sehr gut einkaufen kann. Auf jeden hatten wir nur für zwei Personen bestellt und wir hätten vermutlich noch sechs weitere Personen davon satt bekommen. Die Damen waren zauberhaft und wollten uns alles einpacken. Dumm war eben: wir hatten keine Mini-Bar im Zimmer.

Die Bruschetta waren ganz fantastisch und so bekomme ich sie in Deutschland nie.

A very calm nice and especially tasty day in Civitavecchia came to an end.



Ein sehr schöner ruhiger und vor allem leckerer Tag geht in Civitavecchia zu Ende.
