Tage/Days 10-11 nach der/after QUANTUM OF THE SEAS in Jacksonville, NC und/and Savannah, GA

Morgens geht es zum Frühstück. Aber leider ist bis auf die Banane nichts richtiges für mich dabei. Das Convenience-Omelette ist voll Käse. Was mich wundert: ich bin fast alleine da. Es ist nämlich Feiertag in den USA: Veterans Day. Deswegen bin auch ein wenig verwundert, dass die Veteranen-Hymne bereits vor ein paar Tagen an Bord gespielt wurde.



In the morning I went for breakfast. But unfortunately, nothing was right for me except the banana. The convenience omelet was full of cheese. What surprised me: I was almost by myself. It was a public holiday in the US: Veterans Day. That was why I was a bit surprised that the veteran anthem was played on board a few days ago.

We started at 08:30 hrs in the morning.

You were encouraged to publish the pictures of "Love" in Virginia in social media. We still had some little experience of Indian Summer and even blooming cotton fields. And finally, a bottle of Glaceau Vitamin Water Dragon Fruit.



Man wird animiert, seine Bilder von der Liebe zu Virginia auch in Sozialen Netzwerken zu veröffentlichen. Ein wenig erleben noch den Indian Summer und auch noch blühende Baumwollfelder. Und endlich eine Flasche Glaceau VitaminWater Drachenfrucht.

Auf unserem Weg liegt North Carolina. Dort wohnen Linda und Wayne. Wir kennen sie von unserer Fahrt auf der NORWEGIAN JADE 2011 (1). Zwischendurch haben wir sie nochmals in Frankfurt am Flughafen zum Frühstück getroffen und letztes Jahr in Wien zum Weihnachtsmarkt und einem Schnitzel von Figlmüller. Wir müssen ja auch Mittagessen. Was liegt daher näher, sie zu besuchen. Es ist lustig im Auto. Sie wohnen mitten in einem Wohngebiet und meine Tante meinte nur, dass es wohl sich um Familienrestaurant handelt, bei dem ich wohl essen will. Es gibt es ein Barbeque. Das Fleisch wurde extra ganz ganz klein geschnitten. Statt Kartoffelsalat gibt es ein Kartoffelbreisalat. Möglichst viel wurde vom Barbeque so angepasst, dass ich mitessen konnte. Meine Eltern und meine Tante sind ganz begeistert. Kreuzfahrer ticken eben anders und sind immer offen neues zu entdecken und neue Freundschaften zu schließen.



On our way was North Carolina. Linda and Wayne lived there. We knew them from our trip on the NORWEGIAN JADE 2011 (1). Meanwhile, we met each other again in Frankfurt Airport, Germany for breakfast and last year in Vienna for the Christmas market and schnitzel from Figlmüller. We should have lunch. So what was more obvious but visiting them? It was funny in the car. They lived in the middle of a residential area, and my aunt said only that it might be a family restaurant, where I would like to eat. They had a barbeque. The meat was extra small cut. Instead of potato salad, there was a mash potato salad. As much as possible was adapted from the barbeque so that I could eat. My parents and my aunt were very excited. Cruisers just thought differently and were always open to discover new things and make new friends.

Of course, in the end, a few selfies needed to be taken. We would like to stay longer, but we had to head on.



Am Schluss entstehen natürlich ein paar Selfies. Wir würden ja gerne länger bleiben, aber wir müssen weiter.

Abends erreichen wir New Bern und gehen dort schnell im China Garden essen.

Ich nehme einfach vom Büffet. So kann ich sehr gut von jedem eine Kleinigkeit nehmen und so die Nahrung zusammen, die brauche und vertrage: 2-3 Scheibchen Hühnchen, etwas Gemüse und ab in eine Suppe damit.



I just took the buffet. So I could take a little bit of each of them very well and put the food together that I needed and tolerated: 2-3 slices of chicken, some vegetables and off into a soup with it.

Our first leg: the Candlewood Suites in Jacksonville, NC. Each of us got a nice suite. The concern of my mother that they did not have a kettle, but it was probably unfounded. Only that the fridge was in the room, so no undisturbed sleep. Fortunately, there was also an iron and ironing board in the closet, and my mom could iron my shirts.



Unsere erste Etappe: die Candlewood Suites in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Jeder von uns bekommt eine nette Suite. Die Besorgnis meiner Mutter, dass man keinen Wasserkocher hat, ist wohl unbegründet. Nur dass der Kühlschrank im Zimmer steht, erlaubt keinen ungestörten Schlaf. Zum Glück ist auch ein Bügeleisen und ein Bügelbrett im Schrank und meine Mutter bügelt mir meine Hemden.

Ich hatte mir für die USA eine SIM-Karte besorgt, die allerdings nicht so funktioniert, wie sie sollte. Allerdings habe ich meinen Nano-SIM-Schneider nicht mit. Und so muss ich ein Best Buy aufsuchen, weil sie offizieller Händler von H2O sind. Ich muss allerdings eine Erklärung unterschreiben, dass sie nicht für den Verlust von Daten haften. Mehr schlecht als recht schneiden sie mir die SIM-Karte zurecht. Sie passt nicht. Also muss ich nochmals mit ein paar Nagelfeilen nachhelfen, um das passend zu machen, was nicht passt.



I got a SIM card for the US, but it did not work as it should. However, I did not have my nano SIM cutter with me. And so I had to go to a Best Buy because they were an official dealer of H2O. However, I had to sign a statement that they would not be liable for the loss of data. Worse than better they cut the SIM card for me. It did not fit. So I had to help out again with a nail file to make it fit, which did not fit before.

And then I had 4G on the iPhone in the US network and could also surf easily on the iPhone. I could not use this card as a personal hotspot. And according to H2O, it should be also possible with a mobile wireless router and not with an Android device. Unfortunately, the dealer said something wrong. And after the problems, we had already in Alaska, I would not order any more SIM cards there in the future.



Und danach habe ich 4G auf dem iPhone im US-Netz und kann auch schön damit auf dem iPhone surfen. Nur als persönlichen Hotspot kann ich diese Karte nicht nutzen. Und lt. H2O ist es auch mit einem mobilen WLAN-Router und auch nicht mit einem Android-Gerät möglich. Da hat der Händler leider etwas falsches behauptet. Und nach den Problemen bereits zuvor in Alaska werde ich dort künftig keine SIM-Karten mehr bestellen.

Im Candlewood Suites wohnen normalerweise Gäste nicht für eine Nacht und versorgen sich selbst. Daher die volleingerichtete Küche. So müssen wir extern frühstücken. Wir fahren zu The Kettle Diner. Eben typisch amerikanisch. Ich kann nur ein klein bisschen essen. Unsere Kellnerin kommt vorbei und fragt, ob etwas mit dem Essen nicht stimmt und ich erkläre ihr, dass ich vor kurzem eine Magen-Bypass-OP hatte. Sie meint nur, dass sie sich das schon gedacht hat, so wie ich aussehe und so wie ich esse. Sie fragt mich, ob ich mir vorstellen könne, dass sie vor einem Jahr etwa 250 kg gewogen hat. Sie erzählt mir, wie sie abgenommen hat und wie Zimt-Kapseln sie beim Fettabbau unterstützt haben.



At Candlewood Suites, guests usually did not stay for one night only and cared for themselves. Hence the fully-equipped kitchen. So we went to have breakfast outside. We drove to The Kettle Diner. Just typical American. I could only eat a little bit. Our waitress came by and asks if there was something wrong with the food and I explained to her that I recently had gastric bypass surgery. She just meant that she had already assumed that, just as I looked and ate like I had one. She asked me if I could imagine that she weighed about 550 lbs. a year ago. She told me how she lost weight and how cinnamon capsules helped her losing weight.

My TomTom on the iPhone was better than NeverLost in the car. Current traffic reports were processed. We had to fill up on the way. But somehow it appeared like Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". Here I bought Jack Link's Beef Jerky and Red Bull. The small packs of Beef Jerky were perfect. The pieces were cut very small and dissolved directly. Later, I got larger packages, but that also meant larger pieces that were less digestible. But it had a lot of protein.



Mein TomTom im iPhone ist besser als der NeverLost im Wagen. Es werden aktuelle Verkehrsmeldungen verarbeitet. Unterwegs müssen wir tanken. Aber irgendwie wirkt es hier wie bei Alfred Hitchcocks "Die Vögel". Hier kaufe ich mir Jack Link's Beef Jerky und Red Bull. Die kleinen Packungen Beef Jerky sind sehr gut. Auch die Stücke sind sehr klein geschnitten und lösen sich direkt auf. Später bekomme ich größere Packungen, aber das bedeutet auch größere Stücke, die sich weniger gut verdauen lassen. Aber es hat viel Eiweiß.

Mittags essen wir in Georgetown, South Carolina. Wir gehen ins Wildfish Grill. Der Name verspricht eigentlich eine schöne Karte mit gegrilltem Fisch, aber das meiste ist wieder fritiert. Eben so typisch für die USA. Für mich gibt es zur Abwechslung mal wieder eine Fischfrikadelle.



We had lunch in Georgetown, SC. We went to the Wildfish Grill. The name actually promised a nice menu with grilled fish, but most of it was deep-fried again. Just typical for the USA. For me, I had a fish cake again.

After the meal, we went for a walk through the old town. Homemade ice cream was available at Sweeties Sweets. It was so good that my father not willing to share anything so we could try. It was nice to enjoy some sunshine and warmth again. Especially right at the water. It felt good.



Nach dem Essen gehen wir noch durch die Altstadt ein wenig spazieren. Bei Sweeties Sweets gibt es hausgemachtes Eiscreme. Es ist so gut, dass mein Vater nicht bereit ist, etwas abzugeben, damit wir mal probieren können. Es ist schön, mal wieder Sonnenschein und Wärme zu genießen. Vor allem direkt am Wasser. Es tut gut.

We continued to Charleston, SC. Since we did not have much time, we quickly went to the Bake House. I bought a caffeine-free cappuccino and went to the waterfront promenade to take pictures. My parents and aunt stayed in the Bake House and drank tea and went to the toilets. However, I did not find Charleston so exciting. Maybe that was because I was from Central Europe and that was not so exciting.



Weiter geht es nach Charleston, South Carolina. Da wir nicht viel Zeit haben, gehen wir schnell ins Bake House. Ich kaufe einen koffeinfreien Cappucino und gehe kurz zur Uferpromenade zum Fotografieren. Meine Eltern und Tante bleiben lieben im Bake House und trinken dort Tee und suchen die Toiletten auf. So spannend finde ich Charleston allerdings nicht. Das liegt vielleicht daran, dass ich eben aus Mitteleuropa komme und das eben dadurch nicht ganz so spannend ist.

Wir erreichen das nächste Etappenziel: Savannah, Georgia. Die Nacht verbringen wir im SpringHill Suites in der Altstadt. Meine Eltern und meine Tante haben Glück. Ich habe Pech: in der Toilette meines ersten Zimmers ist Toilettenpapier im Becken. Es ist klar, dass hier das Zimmermädchen keine große Lust hatte. Ich bestehe auf ein anderes Zimmer und auf gar keinen Fall eines, das von dem selben Zimmermädchen gereinigt wurde. Ich habe Pech: die Rezeptionsangestellte ist neu. Sie weigert sich, ihren Vorgesetzten anzurufen und bietet mir nur ein Zimmer an, im gleichen Bezirk des Zimmermädchens. Alternativ will sie mir mein Geld auszahlen und ich soll mir selbst in Savannah ein Zimmer suchen. Mein zweites Zimmer liegt zum Pool, so dass jeder Poolbenutzer mir ins Zimmer gucken kann.



We reached the next destination: Savannah, GA. We spent the night at the SpringHill Suites in the old town. My parents and my aunt were lucky. I was unlucky: in the toilet of my first room was toilet paper in the toilet. It was clear that the maid did not spend a lot of efforts here. I insisted on another room and certainly not one that was cleaned by the same maid. I was unlucky: the receptionist was new. She refused to call her supervisor and offered me only one room, in the same room which was made by the maid. Alternatively, she wanted to refund my money, and I should search for myself an alternative room in Savannah. My second room was located near the pool so that every pool user could watch me into the room.

But the room was not thoroughly cleaned: carpet fluff.



Aber auch das Zimmer ist nicht vollständig gereinigt: Teppichflusen.

And another hair of a stranger in the sink. I was wondering if I should send it to the CSI Las Vegas to find out it was not my DNA in the hair.



Und noch ein fremdes Haar im Waschbecken. Ich überlege mir, ob ich es nicht beim CSI Las Vegas einschicken soll, um festzustellen, dass es nicht meine DNA in diesem Haar ist.

Linda und Wayne raten uns, unbedingt im Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room zu essen. Aber leider ist es nur mittags geöffnet.



Linda and Wayne recommended us to dine at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room absolutely. But it was only open for lunch.

I dashed to buy something edible somewhere. At Co Banh Mi Noodles Bar, I bought some Cantonese noodle soups. The portions were huge and heavy. It was cold outside. And the way back far.



Ich laufe los, um schnell irgendwo etwas Essbares zu kaufen. Bei Co Banh Mi Noodles Bar kaufe ich ein paar kantonesische Nudelsuppen. Die Portionen sind riesig und schwer. Draußen ist es kalt. Und der Weg zurück weit.

Zufällig kommt ein Rikscha-Taxi von Royal Bike Taxi vorbei. So komme ich doch noch schnell zurück ins Hotel und zum Ende dieser Abschnitt der Reise. Aber keine Angst. Der neue Abschnitt beginnt ebenfalls in diesem Blog und das schon sehr bald: DISNEY DREAM 2014.

Morgens vor 05.00 Uhr ist bereits auf dem offenem Deck die Hölle los. Es ist eiskalt und alle laufen so rum, als ob sie einen Landgang auf Grönland wohl hätten. Überall ertönt Musik, die mit New York zu tun hat: "An Englishman in New York", "Empire State of Mind" usw. - Gibt es eigentlich gar keine Lieder über New Jersey. Schließlich fahren wir ja nach Bayonne, NJ. Überall gibt es kostenlos Sekt bzw. Sekt-Orange - nur meinen Smoothie gibt es nicht mehr an der Solarium Bar. Die Stimmung ist sehr gut. Da muss man sagen: sie haben es toll gemacht!



In the morning before 05:00 hrs the crowd was already on the open deck. It was freezing cold, and everyone ran around as if they would have a shore excursion on Greenland. Everywhere, music was played that had a relationship with New York: "An Englishman in New York", "Empire State of Mind", etc. - There were actually no songs about New Jersey. Finally, we were heading to Bayonne, NJ. There was free sparkling wine or mimosa everywhere - only my smoothie was no longer available at the Solarium bar. The atmosphere was excellent. I had to say: they did a great job!

With a minor delay, we arrived at the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge.

Ich habe keine Lust extra hoch zu laufen, um zu sehen, wie nahe wir mit dem Schornstein rankommen. Auch später als es hell wird, können wir schön rüber zur Brücke gucken.

Wir fahren an der Freiheitsstatue vorbei.

Es ist ein toller Anblick.

Der Kapitän dreht direkt vor der Freiheitsstatue. Ist das nicht fantastisch? Weil ich gefragt habe...

Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass aus PR-Gründen eher etwas geplant war. Aber zumindest habe ich laut öffentlich gefragt.

Und der zweite Höhepunkt: Die Skyline der Südspitze Manhattans mit dem neuen One World Trade Center.

And if you would not make an extra loop in front of the Statue of Liberty, you just would make a backward move into the bay of Bayonne and would see the Skyline of Manhattan from a distance.



Und wenn man ohne Sonderschleife vor der Freiheitsstatue ankommt: dann biegt man rückwärts in das Hafenbecken von Bayonne rein und sieht dann mit der Entfernung die Skyline von Manhatten.

Und leider dann eben auch mit ein paar Hindernissen. Deswegen liebe ich die Einfahrt in den Hudson River hoch bis zum Manhattan Cruise Terminal, wie damals auf der NORWEGIAN SPIRIT 2007, QUEEN VICTORIA 2008, and NORWEGIAN SPIRIT 2008.

Zunächst befürchte ich, dass wir viel zu früh anlegen und wir alles bloß im Dunkeln sehen: aber ich muss zugeben, dass Royal Caribbean es perfekt insziniert hat.

Nur wie haben sie es mit dem Sonnenaufgang an diesem Morgen arrangiert?

It was fantastic at all.



Es ist auf jeden Fall fantastisch.

Nur am Temperaturregler hätten sie noch etwas drehen können... Vermutlich hat jemand die Karte rausgezogen und es wurde dann kühler, wie in meiner Kabine...



Only, they could better set up the temperature... I assumed that someone removed the keycard and it became colder, like in my stateroom...

And the historic fireboat JOHN J. HARVEY accompanied us until we entered the port basin of Bayonne.

I promised my parents, that it would become spectacular when we entered New York.



Ich habe meinen Eltern versprochen, dass die Einfahrt nach New York aufregend wird.

Auch sie waren schon mehrfach hier, aber es ist doch etwas anderes in New York mit einem Schiff anzukommen oder einfach mit dem Flugzeug am JFK oder Newark aus Übersee zu landen. Nur wenn man in La Guardia landet, bekommt man manchmal einen kostenlosen Rundflug.



They have been here several times as well, but arriving in New York by ship or by an overseas flight at JFK or Newark Airport was somehow different. Only when you landed in La Guardia, you sometimes got a free sightseeing loop.

We were heading for the last breakfast. My parents accompanied me to American Icon. The line was processed quickly. My dad was very happy, because now the special requests also worked and you actually could order an omelette from egg whites. And he said it was very tasty. We enjoyed the last great service by Hilda Ramos.



Auf zum letzten Frühstück. Meine Eltern begleiten mich zum American Icon. Die Schlange wird schnell abgearbeitet. Mein Vater ist ganz glücklich, weil jetzt die Sonderwünsche auch klappen und man tatsächlich ein Omelette aus Eiweiß bestellen kann. Und er sagt, dass es besonders lecker sei. Wir genießen den letzten tollen Service durch Hilda Ramos.

Zwischenzeitlich werden die Kabinen schon vorbereitet. So stehen auch nochmals die Türen auf für die Familien-Suiten-Kombinationen, bei denen drei Kabinen zusammen verbunden werden können. Die ersten Gäste sind schon raus, so dass man auch mal ein paar Innenkabinen mit virtuellem Balkon sehen kann. Offensichtlich gibt es wieder Schwierigkeiten mit den RFID-Schlösser an den Türen. Und offensichtlich gibt es woanders auch Body Lotion, die ich zum Leidwesen meines Hautarztes viel zu selten verwende.



In the meantime, they started to prepare the cabins. So one last time, the doors were open to see the family suites combinations, when three cabins were connected together. The first guests left already, so that sometimes you could see a few inside cabins with a virtual balcony. Obviously, there were difficulties again with the RFID locks of the doors. And obviously, there was also body lotion elsewhere, which I rarely used, much to the chagrin of my dermatologist.

The disembarkation began. I stuck my 34 on the back of my card in case anyone would check. When we passed, you could see to which sections the cabins on Deck 10 were divided. Everywhere hanged the different bags for the dirty laundry. The current status was displayed on the screens onboard. Not so good: in between, a giant queue emerged and the times were simply changed on the screen without any announcement. So I had to inform the limousine service quickly, so they had to adjust my booking. Why was this always happening with Royal Caribbean now and Celebrity when we sailed on CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010? At least I have the feeling: it did not happen with the others... or the others kept you better informed, so you did not have the impression that it was running so bad. But here you rarely got a reasonable answer, even when you asked. The beverage station of Café two 70° was opened so that guests were at least supplied with water as the duration of waiting was unknown. The smokers all stayed to the promenade and there was no announcements. At least you could see from there that nothing worked anymore. My father conquered a cocoon, and before he could stretch out to be photographed, they let 34 off the ship.



Die Ausschiffung beginnt. Ich klebe mir meine 34 auf die Rückseite meiner Karte, falls einer doch gucken sollte. Beim Vorbeilaufen sieht man doch, zu welchen Abschnitten die Kabinen auf Deck 10 aufgeteilt sind. Überall hängen die unterschiedlichen Säcke für die dreckige Wäsche. An den Anzeigetafeln an Bord wird der aktuelle Stand angezeigt. Weniger gut: es entsteht zwischendurch eine Riesenschlange und die Zeiten werden einfach wortlos an den Anzeigetafeln geändert. So muss ich schnell den Limousinendienst informieren, damit sie ggfls. den Auftrag neu einstellen. Warum passiert das eigentlich nur immer bei Royal Caribbean jetzt und Celebrity damals auf der CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010? Zumindest habe ich das Gefühl: bei den anderen passiert das nicht... oder die anderen informieren besser, so dass man nicht den Eindruck hat, dass es schlecht läuft. Aber hier bekommt man selbst, wenn man fragt, selten eine vernünftige Antwort. Es wird die Getränkestation von Café two 70° geöffnet, damit die Gäste zumindest mit Wasser versorgt werden, solange die Wartezeit unbekannt ist. Die Raucher ziehen sich alle auf die Promenade zurück und dort wird aber nichts angesagt. Zumindest sieht man von dort, dass nichts mehr läuft. Mein Vater erobert sich einen Kokon und bevor er sich breit machen kann, um darin fotografiert zu werden, darf 34 raus.

Die Wartezeit nutze ich, um mich mal auf der oberen Ebene von two 70° umzusehen.

Kurz vor New York beginnt das High Speed Internet so dass ich gut uns auf Marine Traffic verfolgen kann.

Und ich kann endlich in akzeptabler Zeit auch meine Bilder auf den FTP-Server bei T-Online hochladen.



And I could finally upload in an acceptable time my pictures by FTP with T-Mobile Germany.

And now I got the notification from the update-server with Apple, that an update for the Royal IQ-App was available for download.



Und jetzt meldet sich auch der Update-Server von Apple mit einem Update von Royal IQ.

Ein hilfreicher Mitarbeiter bringt uns wegen des Gehstocks meines Vaters an der Schlange vorbei direkt in die neue Gepäckhalle. Das Gepäck finden wir schnell und auch einen Gepäckträger. Der wiederum darf nämlich auch in eine Sonderschlange. Bei der Einreise taut das Eis erst auf, als der Beamte feststellt, dass ich ja in der Nähe (für amerikanische Verhältnisse) von Hanau wohne. Dort war er jahrelang stationiert. So sind wir 10.50 Uhr bereits draußen. Die Limousine habe ich auf 11.30 Uhr umbestellt, weil nur 15 Minuten kostenlos gewartet wird.



A helpful employee took us past the line and into the new luggage hall because of my father's walking stick. We quickly found our bags and also a porter. He was allowed to join a special queue. When we had the immigration the atmosphere became friendlier when the official determined that I was close from a place near Hanau, Germany. There he was stationed for years. So we are already outside 10:50 hrs. I rebooked the limousine for 11:30 hrs, because only a free wait time of 15 minutes were included.

Now we had two problems: we could not tell our driver which exit we were waiting for him. Our porter told us that we were the very first passengers at the brand new Cruise Terminal in Bayonne and so there were no numbers installed yet at the exits, like at the old terminal we passed by later.



Nun gab es zwei Probleme: wir können unserem Fahrer nicht sagen, an welchem Ausgang wir stehen. Unser Gepäckträger informiert uns, dass wir die ersten Passagiere am brandneuen Cruise Terminal in Bayonne sind und daher gibt es noch keine Nummern an den Ausgängen hängen, wie beim alten Terminal, an dem wir später vorbeifahren.

Und niemand kennt die Wegführung und so verscheuchen Polizisten ständig die Fahrzeuge, die jemanden abholen oder bringen, weil keiner weiß, wo er sich hinstellen darf.



And no one was familiar with the route and so policemen constantly scared away the vehicles that came for pick-up or drop-off someone, because no one could tell where he may stay to wait.

We had luck, and it was sunny, and warm.



Zum Glück ist es aber sonnig und warm.

Weil es auch keine Sitzmöglichkeiten gibt, muss mein Vater auf dem Koffer sitzen.

Wir lassen uns zu Hertz am Flughafen Newark fahren. Dort steht ein großer Chrysler Town and Country für uns bereit. Ich habe über den ADAC gebucht, weil es in diesem Fall günstiger war. Weil man online mit der Kreditkarte zahlen muss und ich für die hohen Kosten an Bord und in den USA etwas Luft haben wollte, wollte ich die Online-Buchung nicht. Deswegen habe ich dann ein ADAC-Reisebüro aufgesucht, um dann festzustellen: auch hier geht nur mit der Kreditkarte. Und vor allem: sie machen das gleiche, was ich auch getan hätte: im Internet zu buchen. Nur zwischenzeitlich war das günstigste Angebot mit Alamo schon ausgebucht. Ärgerlich.



We went to Hertz at Newark Airport, NJ. There had a big Chrysler Town and Country ready for us. I booked through the ADAC - the German counterpart of AAA because it was cheaper in this case. Because you had to pay online with the credit card and I wanted to have some capacity for the high costs onboard and in the US, I did not want the online booking. That was why I went to an ADAC travel agency to find out: here it was only possible with a credit card too. And above all, they dd the same thing I could do myself: booking on the internet. Only in the meantime was the cheapest deal with Alamo already sold out. Annoying.

I was astonishment that I got a NeverLost navigation device, even though I did not order any. So I could have saved the cost of my TomTom on the iPhone for the US.



Zu meinem Erstaunen bekomme ich jedoch ein NeverLost-Navigationsgerät mit, obwohl ich gar keines bestellt hatte. So hätte ich mir die Kosten für meinen TomTom auf dem iPhone für die USA sparen können.

Unterwegs gibt es dann Probleme. Raststätten entlang der I-95 bedeuten in der Regel Fast Food. Ein Smoothie besteht nicht aus frischen Früchten sondern aus stark zuckerhaltigem Sorbet. Nach langem hin und her nehme ich ein Hot Dog von Nathan's Famous. Durch meinen Würstchen-Check an Bord wusste ich ja, dass der Coney Island Hot Dog sehr weich ist und als ich auf Coney Island schon mal war, wusste ich auch dass mit Coney Island Hot Dog ein Hot Dog von Nathan's Famous gemeint ist. Ein Stückchen Käse von der Stange. Ein bis zwei Pommes Frites, die aus Kartoffelbrei sind und sofort im Mund zerfallen und ein Protein-Drink, der allerdings wie Orangen-Backsoda-Zahnpasta schmeckt, bilden mein Mittagessen.



On the way, I got problems. Rest areas along I-95 usually meant fast food. A smoothie was not made from fresh fruits but from a high-sugar sherbet. After a long back and forth, I took a hot dog from Nathan's Famous. With my sausage check onboard I knew that the Coney Island Hot Dog should be very soft and when I was on Coney Island before, I also knew that Coney Island Hot Dog meant a hot dog of Nathan's Famous. A piece of cheese bar. One or two French fries, which were made of mashed potatoes and instantly disintegrated in the mouth, and a protein drink that tasted like orange baking soda toothpaste, made up my lunch.

I dropped off my parents with my Aunt Dorothy near Washington, DC and headed straight to my hotel room around the corner at Hampton Inn.

So können meine Tante und mein Vater in aller Ruhe ihre Kindheitserinnerungen austauschen, ohne dass ich die ganze Zeit zuhören muss. Und später geht es mit denen und meinen Cousinen Angela und Robert und deren Familien, die im Großraum von Washington DC leben zu Joes Crab Shack zum Abendessen. Sachen, die ich nicht essen darf und die alle gerne gegessen hätte. Aber ich wollte kein Spielverderber sein. Und das gehört zum Veränderungsprozess mit dazu: Disziplin und Versuchungen widerstehen. So gibt es für mich wieder Suppe und wieder eine Fischfrikadelle.



So my aunt and father could peacefully share their childhood memories without having to listen all the time. And later it was about those and my cousins Angela and Robert and their families living in the greater Washington, DC area Joe's Crab Shack for dinner. Things that I could not eat and that everyone would have liked to eat. But I did not want to be a spoilsport. And that was part of the process of change: discipline and temptation resistance. So there was soup for me again and a fish cake.

Unfortunately, I realized that I forgot to pack some shirts onboard. So tonight I had to go to a Surf'N'Suds Laundromat. I could just hand out in the laundry and had it washed and folded for 10.00 USD (2014 for a minimum of 10 lbs.). Unfortunately, they did not offer ironing service.



Leider stelle ich fest, dass ich wohl ein paar Hemden an Bord vergessen habe einzupacken. So muss ich heute Abend zu einem Surf'N'Suds Laundromat. Dort kann ich die Wäsche einfach abgeben und für 10,00 USD (2014 für min. 10 lbs.) waschen und falten lassen. Leider bieten sie keinen Bügelservice an.

Aber drei Stunden später kann ich alles wieder abholen und auch meine Vitamine sind angekommen. Weil mein Magen ja nicht mehr so funktioniert, wie vorher, muss ich bis zu meinem Lebensende jeden Tag bestimmte Vitamine und Calcium-Citrat zu mir nehmen. In den USA sind Vitaminpräparate in der Regel günstiger. So habe ich sie vorab bei Bariatric Advantage bestellt.



But three hours later, I could pick up everything and my vitamins arrived. Because my stomach did not work as before, I had to take certain vitamins and calcium citrate every day until the end of my life. In the US, vitamin supplements were generally cheaper. So I ordered it in advance with Bariatric Advantage.
