Tag/Day 1.3 auf der/on QUANTUM OF THE SEAS in Southampton, England

Meine Eltern und ich waren in unterschiedlichen Sammelstationen. Das haben wir der Sturheit von Royal Caribbean zu verdanken, dass sie eben meine Kabinenzuteilung nicht mehr ändern wollten. Aber ich bin auch stur. Wenn es das nächste Mal bei vergleichbarer Route und vergleichbaren Preisen zur Entscheidung kommt, ob ich Royal Caribbean oder eine andere Gesellschaft wähle, dann werde ich mich bestimmt daran erinnern, dass ich zunächst meine Eltern abholen, sie dann in ihre Sammelstation setzen, danach selbst zu meiner eigenen Sammelstation laufen musste, die natürlich am anderen Ende des Schiffes war: D4. Seitdem eben jeder Quadratzentimeter an Bord kommerzialisiert wird, gehe ich gerne früher hin, um mir einen Sitzplatz zu sichern. Und mit 48 erlaube ich mir den Luxus, nicht mehr aufzustehen, wenn Ältere und Familien mit kleinen Kindern kommen. Auch die müssen nicht bis zur letzten Minute ihr Bier austrinken und können auch früher auftauchen, um sich einen Sitzplatz zu sichern. Meine Sammelstation war bei Jamie's Italian und irgendwie habe ich den Eindruck, dass es kein Zufall war, dass sie in Southampton ausgerechnet vor Ikea "geparkt" hatten, um vermutlich dort im Schnäppchenmarkt am Ausgang sich einzudecken. Auf den Metallstühlen sitzt man ganz furchtbar. Und sollte sich weigern, so einen Platz zugeteilt zu bekommen. Während des Wartens guckt man anfangs noch Jamie Oliver ein wenig auf dem Bildschirm zu, wie er kocht. Aber die Sendungen laufen auch auf RTL Living bei uns zu Hause. Später gibt es nur hoch den Hinweis, dass man denen zugucken soll. Es gab nur zwei Probleme: viele mussten stehen und dadurch sah man gar nichts auf den Gängen, auf denen demonstriert wurde, wie man die Rettungswesten anlegt. Auf jeden Fall zog es sich ziemlich hin.



My parents and I were allocated to different muster stations. We owed that to the stubbornness of Royal Caribbean that they just did not want to change my cabin location. But I was also stubborn. The next time, whenever I had to decide whether to choose Royal Caribbean or any other company, with a comparable route and prices: I would remember all the steps. First, I had to pick up my parents, then deliver them in their muster station, and then I had to run myself to my own muster station, which was of course at the other end of the ship: D4. Ever since every square inch on board has been commercialized, I liked to go there earlier to secure a seat. And at the age of 48, I allowed myself the luxury of not getting up, when the elderly and families came with small children. They did not have to drink their beer until the last minute and could show up earlier to secure a seat. My muster station was at Jamie's Italian, and somehow I had the impression that it was no coincidence that they had "parked" in front of Ikea in Southampton just to stock up on the bargain at the exit. On the metal chairs, you sit very awfully. And I should refuse to be assigned such a place. While waiting, in the beginning, you watched Jamie Oliver on the screen as he cooked. But the programs were also running on RTL Living at our home. Later, there was only a hint that you should watch them. There were only two problems: many had to stand, and thus nothing was seen on the aisles where they demonstrated how to put on lifejackets. In any case, it was pretty drawn out.

I arrived before the crew reached the station. So none registered me at the entrance. But later one ran around to ask at the table if there was someone who was not enrolled yet.



Ich war ja schon vor der Crew an der Station. Deswegen wurde ich am Eingang nicht erfasst. Aber später rannte einer rum, der noch an den Tischen nachfragte, ob jemand bislang noch nicht erfasst wurde.

Auf einen großen Rundgang habe ich am ersten Tag noch gar keine Lust. Ich sehe eine dieser Zugängen zu einer Familien-Suite, die aus einer Suite, einer Balkonkabine und einer Innenkabine bestehen und die dann durch einen gemeinsamen Eingang betreteten werden können.



I was not interested in a big tour on the first day. I saw the access to the Family Suite, which was a combination of a suite, a balcony cabin, and an inside cabin and you had to enter through a common entrance.

Somehow the open deck was anyhow "sexy".

I changed our reservation in Chic this evening for another reservation. And so we went to the Windjammer Café without any stress. We refrained from visiting Mamma Mia. My previous company did not manage to put pressure on me, and Royal Caribbean will not make it. First of all, however, the hands were washed. I find it absolutely good that you saw such stations more and more often on new ships.



Ich habe im Chic unsere Reservierung heute Abend gegen eine andere Reservierung getauscht. Und so gehen wir stressfrei ins Windjammer Café essen. Auf den Besuch von Mamma Mia verzichten wir. Meine bisherige Firma hat es nicht mehr geschafft mich unter Druck zu setzen und Royal Caribbean wird es auch nicht schaffen. Zunächst einmal wird aber Hände gewaschen. Finde ich absolut gut, dass man jetzt solche Stationen immer öfters auf neuen Schiffen sieht.

Nun irgendwer hatte mal in seinem Reisebericht geschrieben, dass Royal Caribbean der König des Kartoffelbreis ist und das stimmt. Im Moment für mich absolut hilfreich, wenn nicht die Kohlenhydrate wären. Aber da ich maximal eh nur zwei bis drei Esslöffel zu mir nehmen kann, spielen die Kohlenhydrate eine untergeordnete Rolle.



Well somebody once wrote in his travelogue that Royal Caribbean was the king of potato mash and that was true. At the moment, it was constructive for me, if that were no carbohydrates. But since I could take only two to three tablespoons at most, the carbohydrates played a minor role.

I liked the water with the lemon or mango flavor. Small trick who wanted it without flavor: instead of pushing the tap, you had to pull it. So pulling: with taste - pushing: without flavor.



Das Wasser mit Limonen oder Mangogeschmack mag ich. Kleiner Trick für diejenigen, die es ohne Gechmack wollen: Den Hebel drücken statt ziehen: Also ziehen: mit Geschmack - drücken: ohne Geschmack.

Na gut: die Suppe war schon mal nichts für mich.



Well: the soup was not anything for me.

My dinner consisted of one meatball and little mash potatoes. I started the competition: who got the less of a meatball on one spoon.



Mein Abendessen besteht aus einem Fleischklößchen und ein bisschen Kartoffelbrei. Ich starte den Wettbewerb: wer bekommt am wenigsten vom Fleischklößchen auf einen Löffel.

Ich probiere die andere Suppe: schmeckt leider auch nicht. Aber in einer Ecke entdecke ich die amerikanische Küche, die aus mexikanischem Chilli con Carne (zum Glück nicht scharf), Salsa (ungeignet), Sour Cream (sehr viel Eiweiß - leider auch zu viel Fett, aber viel vertrage davon eh nicht) und etwas Bulgur-ähliches. Heute Abend klappt es ganz gut. Leider ist es nicht die Garantie, dass ich dasselbe Essen an einem anderen Tag genauso gut vertrage. Übrigens alles aufzuessen habe ich dann nicht mehr geschafft. Das muss ich noch lernen, dass ich mir weniger auf den Teller legen muss.



I tried the other soup: unfortunately it did not taste either. But in a corner, I discovered the American kitchen, the Mexican Chilli con Carne (fortunately not spicy), Salsa (unsuitable), Sour Cream (a lot of protein - unfortunately too much fat, but a lot I could not tolerate anyone) and something bulgur (Turkish grains or something). Tonight, it worked quite well. Unfortunately, it's not a guarantee that I can handle the same food on another day as well. By the way, I did not manage to finish everything. I still had to learn that I had to put less on the plate.

I would like to weigh myself. That was why I went to the gym. I promised my doctors that I did not do anything yet, although I would have liked to. The only scale I could find was coded and nobody from the gym was there. The only crew members in the gym were probably dancers who were training a bit.



Ich hätte mich gerne gewogen. Deswegen gehe ich ins Fitness-Studio. Meinen Ärzten habe ich versprochen, dass ich jetzt noch nichts mache, obwohl ich eigentlich Lust gehabt hätte. Die einzige Waage, die ich finde, ist codiert und niemand vom Fitness-Studio ist da. Die einzigen Crew-Mitglieder im Fitness-Studio sind wohl Tänzer, die gerade ein wenig trainieren.

Gut sind die Anzeigen, welcher Fahrstuhl der nächste ist und in welche Richtung er fährt. Grün nach oben.

Auch im Fahrstuhl findet man eine grobe Orientierung.

As usual with Royal Caribbean, you could check the actual weekday in the elevators. That was not so bad when you were staying for a couple of days on a Transatlantic passage.



Wie üblich bei Royal Caribbean kann man im Fahrstuhl den aktuellen Wochentag sehen. Das ist gar nicht mal so übel, wenn man so tagelang auf dem Transatlantik unterwegs ist.

Unten auf Deck 2 wird noch fleißig gebaut. Wir sehen viele Arbeiter von der Meyer-Werft oder Subunternehmen, die auch deutsch miteinander sprechen. Sie sollen sich möglichst unauffällig tagsüber auf dem Schiff bewegen. Nur nachts sollen sie ihre Blaumänner tragen.



Down on deck 2 they were still constructing. We saw a lot of workers from Meyer-Shipyard or subcontractors, who spoke German with each other. They should move most inconspicuously during the daytime on the ship. Only in the nighttime, they should wear their blue-collar-dresses.

Here, the board clinics were hidden. You only should know, which of the elevators would take you there. Otherwise, you need to come here on I-95 in the crew-area.



Hier ist die Bordklinik versteckt. Man muss nur wissen, von welchem Fahrstuhl man direkt hinkommt. Sonst muss man über den Hauptgang ("I-95"- Die Nord-Süd-Autobahn an der Ostküste) im Crew Bereich laufen.

Leider schon geschlossen. Hier ist bestimmt eine Waage. Ich werde es morgen probieren.

This could become funny: in some cabins, they had outside of the cabins the advise that the time would be adjusted. But so late, that some guests were already sleeping...



Das kann ja noch lustig werden: an einigen Kabinen hängt außen der Hinweis, dass heute Nacht die Uhr umgestellt wird. Allerdings so spät, dass manche Gäste schon schlafen...

An manchen Kabinen, wie z. B. meiner hängt gar nichts.

Kann man sich auf das Tagesprogramm verlassen?

Und auf den Fernseher, der ja anscheinend weder richtig deutsch noch englisch kann... Und kein Hinweis auf dem Fernseher, wie auf der CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010 damals.



On the TV-set, who was not able to speak proper German nor English... And no advise on the TV-set like on CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010 then.

No, on the bed there was no advise. It should be there.



Nein auf dem Bett ist kein Hinweis. Dort sollte er aber sein.

Ich hatte vorhin im Windjammer Café acht Flaschen Wasser bestellt, aber die wurden noch nicht geliefert.



I ordered before eight bottles of water in the Windjammer Café, but they were not delivered yet.

So I had to pick-up my beverages from above.



Also muss ich mir selbst noch Getränke von oben holen.

Ich gucke mal beim Kabinenservice. WOW... man bezahlt für die Eierspeisen und Pfannkuchen 3,95 USD, wenn man sie sich in die Kabine liefern lässt.



I was checking for the cabin service. WOW... you needed to pay for egg dishes and pancakes 3.95 USD if you like to have them delivered to your cabin.



Und auch für einen Hamburger fallen 4,95 USD extra an.



And also a Hamburger for 4.95 USD extra.

But at least, they had complimentary cranberry juice, according to the menu. Unfortunately, only on the list. You could not get any! It was onboard, but just for sale. They had no complimentary like here on the menu. And you had to pay 15% on top of the beverage!!!



Aber wenigstens gibt es kostenlosen Cranberry-Saft laut Karte. Leider nur auf dem Papier und das ist ja bekanntlich geduldig. Man bekommt keinen! Ist zwar an Bord, aber nur zum Kauf. Es gibt keinen kostenlosen, wie hier auf der Karte. Und dann kämen noch 15% auf die Getränke!!!

Ich bestelle mir darauf hin Tee. Die Kanne bekommt meine Mutter, damit sie sich damit heißes Wasser für sich holen kann. Es gibt keinen Wasserkocher oder Kaffeemaschine wie bei anderen Gesellschaften.



I ordered me some tea. The pot was for my mom since she needed to have a container for hot water. There was no water boiler or coffee machine like with other cruise lines.

They had a Bento-Box.



Es gibt eine Bento-Box.

Fast schon wie im Krankenhaus oder im Flugzeug. Für meinen Arzt: das Tirami Su habe ich nur bestellt, weil alles andere hart ist.



Almost like in a hospital of or in a plane. For my doctor: I ordered only Tirami Su because anything else was hard.

Even they had no glasses from Germany: for pepper, Germany was good enough.



Wenn es schon keine Gläser aus Deutschland gibt: für Pfeffer ist Deutschland gut genug.

Ich wollte die Hühnersuppe haben.



I wanted to have the chicken soup.

The soup inserts were too hard, so I could not eat it yet and more I did not eat of the Tirami Su: I sword.



Die Einlagen waren zu bissfest, so dass ich es noch nicht essen konnte und mehr habe ich vom Tirami Su nicht gegessen: Ich schwöre.

Ich bin schon sehr gespannt, was davon alles in der Kabine stehen bleibt.... Gute Nacht für das erste.
