Seetag/Day at Sea 6 auf der/on QUANTUM OF THE SEAS

New York rückt immer näher. Aber noch sind wir drei Tage an Bord. Ein wunderschöner Morgen beginnt.



We were approaching towards New York. We would be for three more days onboard. A wonderful morning started.



Und sogar ein wunderschöner Sonnenaufgang.



And even a beautiful sunrise.

They had no pool towels in the cabin, and so I had to get a sheet from the pool deck.



In der Kabine gibt es keine Strandtücher, so besorge ich mir mal ein Handtuch vom Pooldeck.

Ist ja doch immer etwas Salz auf den Liegestühlen.



There was still some salt on the sunbed.

It was up to the solarium café for breakfast. Breakfast was prepared by Devin Alexander and was complimentary. Reservations would not be accepted. Everything here seemed fresher, more appetizing and healthier, but there was not necessarily all the classic stuff. Eggs were only available as quiche dishes. Especially the fruits enriched with water were delicious. Only the "classic carbs" were surprising. You could mostly do it all day without carbohydrates. But without you could not survive the day. And in the morning you needed them to survive the day.



Es geht zum Frühstück hoch ins Solarium Café. Das Frühstück wird von Devin Alexander vorbereitet und ist kostenlos. Reservierungen werden nicht angenommen. Hier wirkt alles frischer, appetitlicher und gesünder, aber es gibt eben nicht unbedingt alle klassischen Sachen. Eier gibt es nur als Quiche-Gerichte. Speziell die mit Früchten angereicherten Wässer sind lecker. Lediglich die "klassischen Kohlenhydrate" verwundern. Man zwar weitestgehend auf Kohlenhydrate verzichten. Aber ohne kann man den Tag nicht überstehen. Und morgens braucht man sie, um den Tag zu überstehen.

Die zwei wichtigsten Frauen an Bord: Devin Alexander und Restaurant Managerin Lirene van Zyl. Man muss unbedingt Pralinen, Blumen, Champagner, Parfüm, Nerze, Schmuck usw. mitbringen... Wie soll ich sonst sicherstellen, dass ich immer einen Tisch morgens, mittags und abends bekomme???



The two most important women onboard: Devin Alexander and Restaurant Manager Lirene van Zyl. You absolutely had to have chocolates, flowers, champagne, perfume, mink, jewelry, etc. with you... How else should I make sure that I always would get a table for breakfast, lunch, dinner?

Definitely worth a visit and I was looking forward to seeing them at the ANTHEM OF THE SEAS in April. I was curious if they would recognize me...



Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall und ich freue mich schon beide im April auf der ANTHEM OF THE SEAS zu sehen. Ich bin mal gespannt, ob sie mich wiedererkennen...

Die Schlange sieht kürzer aus als gestern. Und es ist nicht so windig und kalt wie gestern. Eine gute Gelegenheit, vielleicht doch mal einen Versuch zu wagen.



The queue looked shorter than yesterday. And it was not as windy and cold as yesterday. A good opportunity, maybe to try it.

Shortly before 08:30 hrs...



Kurz vor 08:30 Uhr...

North Star ist bereits in Betrieb.

And they were swinging across the sea.



Und man wird kurz über dem Meer geschwenkt.

Zufällig kommen meine Eltern vorbei, aber mein Vater möchte nicht mit und meine Mutter setzt meinen Vater kurzerhand in einen Liegestuhl, damit er sich sonnt. 09:30 Uhr und wir sind nur ein paar Meter weiter. 10:30 Uhr und noch immer nicht am Ziel. Wenigstens kommt ein Bartender vorbei, der mir einen ungekühlten Red Bull. Darüber wird sich der Onboard Revenue Manager freuen. Uns trennt nur noch die letzte Treppe, als der Betrieb still steht, weil sich die Tür nicht schließen lässt. 11:15 Uhr erreichen wir die Zustiegsplattform und können um die Ecke sehen, dass die Schlange immer noch sehr sehr lang ist. Später hören wir von Gästen, die z. B. vier Stunden gestanden haben. Es soll aber bald ein Ticketsystem eingeführt werden. Meine Mutter und ich werden fotografiert, bevor in die Gondel einsteigen. Die Fahrt ist imposant. Es geht einmal über 45° über die offene See und dann 90° hoch. Mir wird gesagt, dass gestern nur 45° nach oben gefahren wurde.



By coincidence, my parents passed by, but my dad did not want to go with me, and my mother put my father in a chair so he could take a sunbath. 09:30 hrs and we were only a few feet further. 10:30 hrs and still not at the end. At least one bartender came by, and he was giving me an uncooled Red Bull. That was what the onboard revenue manager would be pleased about. Only the last stairs separated us, as the operation was suspended because the door could not be closed. 11:15 hrs we reached the boarding platform and could see around the corner, that the queue was still very very long. Later we heard from guests, that they had to wait for four hours. But a ticket system should soon be introduced. My mother and I were photographed before boarding the gondola. The ride was impressive. It went once over 45° above the open sea and then 90° to the top. I was told that yesterday only 45° was driven up.

Ein letztes gemeinsames Bild. Es sind zum Glück nur so wenige Gäste immer gleichzeitig in der Gondel, dass alle sich zwischendurch bewegen können. Es sind nicht für alle Sitzplätze vorhanden. Der Aufzug für Schwerbehinderte ist zum Zeitpunkt unserer Fahrt noch nicht in Betrieb.



One last common picture. Fortunately, there were only so few guests at the same time in the gondola that everyone could move in between. Seats were not available for all guests. The elevator for the disabled was not yet in operation at the time of our journey.

11:30 hrs and the entire fun was after three hours over.

Und nun bekommt das gute Stück eine ganz andere Bedeutung.

I went to try the soft ice-cream.



Ich gehe mal das Softeis probieren.

Als ich komme gibt es nur eine Sorte. Mein Vater hat mir erzählt, dass normalerweise mehrere Sorten bereit stehen.



When I came, they had only one sort. My father told me that they usually had multiple sorts.

Nur ein ganz kleines bisschen... zum Probieren...

Mittags bin ich mit Carolyn und Teijo im Jamie's Italian verabredet. Zuvor war Seenotrettungsübung für die Crew und deswegen konnten sie nicht alles für das Mittagessen vorbereiten. So teilt man uns mit, dass es die normale Zuzahlung kostet, aber man nicht alles bestellen kann. Sind unter meinen Lesern West-Berliner, die noch den Film "Meier" aus dem Jahre 1996. U. a. gab es eine Szene mit Dieter Hildebrandt als Kellner in der Ost-Berliner HO-Gaststätte "Gastmahl des Meeres"... Man sollte nicht fragen, ob sie etwas haben, sondern sagen, was man wollte... und dann kam ein "Haben wir nicht...". Genauso kam ich mir auch vor. So esse ich nur ein paar Mozarella-Kugeln und lasse mir eine Portion Spaghetti Bolognese passieren. Aber viel esse ich davon nicht. Auch nur vom tollen Johannisbeer-Sorbet kann ich nur ganz wenig essen. Zumindest habe ich aber mal alles probiert und ich freue mich auf April 2015, wenn ich hoffentlich ein wenig mehr davon essen kann.



At lunchtime I had an appointment with Carolyn and Teijo at Jamie's Italian. Previously, there was a life drill for the crew so they could not complete preparation for lunch. So they told us that they would charge the regular cover charge, but you could not order all listed items. It was like in the era of Communism in Eastern Europe. A wonderful menu and nothing available. So I ate only a few little mozzarella scopes and let them put a portion of Spaghetti Bolognese through a blender. But I did not eat much of it. Even from the great red-currant sherbet, I could eat only very little. At least I tried everything, and I was looking forward to April 2015, if I would hopefully eat a little more of it.

Despite the limited offer we had our fun. Carolyn told me at the same time that Royal Caribbean responded to the story with the 15% service charge at Johnny Rockets and the cost was withdrawn again.



Trotz eingeschränktem Angebot haben wir unseren Spaß. An der Stelle erzählt mir auch Carolyn, dass Royal Caribbean auf die Geschichte mit den 15% Service-Gebühren im Johnny Rockets reagiert hat und der Aufschlag wieder abgeschafft wird.

Noch ein paar Selfies. Auch mit unserem Kellner Zoltan Papp. Er ist aus Ungarn und so muss ich mit ihm durchsprechen, ob nun die Salami aus Italien oder Ungarn die beste der Welt ist. Er und ich sind uns einig.



A few more selfies. Also with our waiter Zoltan Papp. He was from Hungary, and so I had to discuss with him, whether the salami from Italy or Hungary was the best in the world. He and I agreed.

I was again on the wrong side and need to cross the "I-95" to get to the medical center.



Ich bin mal wieder auf der falschen Seite und muss die "I-95" überqueren, um in die Bordklinik zu kommen.

Leider ist es immer noch nicht ruhig genug für eine Messung. 96.8 kg als Orientierung. Nicht übel.



Unfortunately, it was not calm enogh to go on the scale. 213 lbs. as orientation. No too bad.

So die ersten Sachen lösen sich, z. B. diese Lampe.



So the first items came off, e.g. this lamp.

Everywhere new works of art were put into operation. Here it was fun just to watch how "someone upgraded" the photos.



Überall werden neue Kunstwerke in Betrieb genommen. Hier machte es Spaß einfach zuzugucken, wie man "jemand" die Fotos "aufwertet".

Und auch der Staubsauger macht Spaß. Ich hätte ja einen für zu Hause "geklaut"... aber da sie alle mit den Stationen der Kabinenstewards markiert sind, will ich das keinem antun... Nicht, dass er hinterher vom Gehalt abgezogen wird.



And also the vacuum cleaner was fun. I would have "stolen" one for home... but since they were all marked with the stations of the cabin stewards, I did not want to bring them in trouble... Not that it would be subsequently deducted from their salary.

In the evening, we went to Chic Restaurant to dine. In contrary to the Grande Restaurant jackets were held for those who wanted to eat here without a jacket.



Abends geht es ins Chic Restaurant zum Essen. Im Gegensatz zum Grande werden Jackets für diejenigen bereitgehalten, die hier ohne Jacket speisen wollen.

Um es vorab zu sagen: Das Chic ist so ziemlich das Beste, was wir an den kostenlosen Restaurants erleben. Auf einem Niveau, wie bei anderen Zuzahlrestaurants!



To say it in advance: The chic was pretty much the best we experienced in any complimentary restaurants. On a level, as with other's alternative dining!

The food started well: the brioche rolls were so soft that I could eat them. I also liked this olive paste. Also this tomato cucumber tartare was perfect for me. And again fish or crab meatball. The fish was excellent, according to my father. The desserts were all good too. My dad said you could garnish your chocolate dessert as "007". Our perfect host of the evening was Bogder Nicolae Ilies.



Das Essen fängt gut an: die Brioche-Brötchen sind so weich, dass ich sie essen kann. Auch mag ich diese Olivenpaste. Auch dieses Tomaten-Gurken-Tartar ist perfekt für mich. Und wieder mal Fisch- oder Krebsfleischfrikadelle. Der Fisch ist wohl spitzenmäßig, nach Aussage meines Vaters. Auch die Desserts sind alle gut. Mein Vater meint, dass man sein Schokoladendessert als "007" garnieren könnte. Unser perfekter Gastgeber des Abends ist Bogder Nicolae Ilies.

Wir haben Karten für das Theater. Man hat eigentlich eine Katze im Sack gekauft, weil immer ja im Programm nur stand: Gastkünstler Nummer X. Heute am Abend: Analiza Ching.



We had tickets for the theater. Actually, you bought a pig in a poke because you always found in the daily programme: guest artists number X. Tonight: Analiza Ching.

Leider ist das ganze viel zu laut, so dass ich schnell wieder rausgehe. Irgendwie komme ich mir vor wie bei Holland America, weil viele ihrer Gäste schlechter hören.



Unfortunately, the entire performance was too loud, so I went out quickly. Somehow I felt like cruising with Holland America because many of their guests heard worse.

Finally, I made it to the show in the two 70°. However, only without a ticket, but as a bar guest. I did not see a central theme of the action. An interaction between dance, artistry and effects on the LED wall. I was not sure if I liked it or not. Not a classic production show on a cruise ship.



Endlich mal in der Show im two 70°. Allerdings nur ohne Eintrittskarte, sondern als Besucher der Bar. Den roten Faden einer Handlung sehe ich nicht. Ein Zusammenspiel zwischen Tanz, Artistik und Effekte an der LED-Wand. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich es mag oder nicht. Eben keine klassische Produktionsshow auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff.

Im oberen Bereich der two 70° ist die Bibliothek. Da sie direkt an einen Kabinentrakt angrenzt, soll man sie nur von über two 70° betreten, obwohl eine Tür in den Kabinengang führt.

And by coincidence, I discovered this card: The note for the LGBT or Friends-of-Dorothy-Meetings. It was a pity. I asked for it. On NAVIGATOR OF THE SEAS 2009, the board with all private social events were just around the front desk. When I asked, nobody could tell me, where to find the board and just said, that they would forward my request. But nobody answered by calling me back.



Und zufällig entdecke ich diese Karte: Der Hinweis mit dem LGBT bzw. Friends of Dorothy-Treffen. Schade. Ich hatte danach gefragt. Auf der NAVIGATOR OF THE SEAS 2009 war das Schild mit den Veranstaltungshinweisen immer sehr groß in der Nähe der Rezeption. Als ich gefragt hatte, konnte mir niemand sagen, wo das Schild ist und meinte nur, dass man meine Anfrage weitergibt. Zurückgerufen hat leider keiner.

Die Antwort steht mittlerweile im Tagesprogramm. Und das war ja wiederum früher nicht der Fall. Statt dass man schreibt, wo man es auf dem Schiff findet, könnte man ja auch direkt schreiben, wann und wo die Veranstaltung stattfindet.

Und zum ersten Mal kann ich mich nicht auf die Uhr am Telefon verlassen... Sie geht drei Stunden vor.
